New AI Developments

Last week, I was enjoying the news of Chinese developers creating Deepseek, showing that AI can be achieved with fewer resources than they have been. It was great news. It allows technology to progress, and shows that these learnings can be improved over time, it gives access to AI to the people who previously had no chance of working with it and allows more people to benefit. Today I heard the news that Google have removed their pledge not to use AI for developing weapons or surveilling. This is possibly the worst tech news I have heard all year and I have heard some horrendous news already. I am absolutely disgusted, and I am terrified. I don't know how to express just how much of a bad idea this is. Barring my dislike of weapons development in the first place, there are so many unreliabilities with AI. I feel sick.

Here is a link to the web archive page for this article. I don't even know how to express my discontent for this in a way that Google will be aware of just how messed up I think this decision is. I hate how much every country, business, whatever, seems to be ramping up towards war. It's devastating, I don't want people to get hurt, I don't want to lose loved ones or have to pretend I believe in nationalism. I don't understand why people have to be so greedy, why they can't look to solve problems by working together as humans. I hate this hate this hate this.
